The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System is maintained by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid services for use by Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance carriers. HCPCS codes are 5 character codes that begin with a letter, and can represent supplies, durable medical equipment, drugs not given orally, procedures, and 2 character modifiers that are not found in the CPT® manual. Many webinars discuss CPT® and ICD-10-CM coding, but there doesn’t seem to be much discussion about HCPCS. There maybe items and services that are reimbursable, but offices may not be aware that these codes can be found in the HCPCS manual. There are also codes specifically for Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurances.
